The phrase 'carbon footprint' is used in the radio carbon  dating of a substance. When a carbon atom is formed is nucleus slowly  deforms and changes. This change is then calculated and from this the age of the material formed is calculated. This is meant by a carbon footprint.   HAPPY TO HELP.
