On a thermostat the coils always face the engine and the dome faces the radiator hose.
The hot coolant heats the coils and causes them to contract opening the ''valve" to let coolant through the hose and into the radiator.

Usually blinking is because of a internal problem with the Transmission. Blinking also means you should have a transmission code stored as well, so if you take it to a shop or have a friend with a scanner or code reader you will have somthing to help.
