Ceramic refers to any of various hard, brittle, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials made by shaping and then firing a nonmetallic mineral, such as clay, at a high temperature.  Bricks, pipes, refractories, tableware, cookware and pottery products belong to this group.
