I think we should be able to know everything about those we watch on TV, movies, etc.  If I don't like a person's actual personality why would I want to pay to see their movies, etc.

You can try washing them in plain water with a cup of white vinegar added to the water.  Vinegar is all I use for a softener.  It works good and leaves no odor behind.
