I always say "Thank you" or "I got it because the color reminded me of ....." a flower or the ocean or whatever the color reminded me of.

One is not obligated to return a compliment, or to give one. When sincere, give, if so inclined. Personally, I do not send Thank You cards in exchange for receiving Thank You cards. Same goes for "F You" cards, however tempted I may be. But, upon receipt of a compliment, I always say, "thank you."

I usually respond with either "Thanks" or "I like it too."

It's just a "stroke exchange" thing.

In a way, they are complimenting you. By saying your shirt is a beautiful color, they are also saying you have good taste in shirts. At least, that's how it has come across to me in the past. Just a thought, my friend.
