I worked in a circus for a few summers in my teens (I was the youngest sword swallower in the world at one point, but sadly never got around to making it official). No animals were involved though, just a few well loved poodles that belonged to the ringmasters daughter.
I stopped going to circuses. I don't believe in exploiting animals for entertainment.
I've been to the circus a few times when I was a young kid. I don't like them because of the way they treat their animals. Any wild animal in captivity and controlled by humans is a slow death.
The circus doesn't seem to get much media coverage in my part of the world except locally when a circus visits a particular locality.

My experience is similar to Didge...you could go to the carnival and the circus locally every year in the 1950's when I was a child, and grew up with movies like THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952) and DUMBO (1941).
