A perusal of several forums tells me that the parts aren't compatable between the iPhone 4 and the 4S. Several did mention the SIM dock, though.

If "your" iphone had updates past ios 4.something, you're losing your time. You either need 1) a computer with credentials for that phone 2)the appleid&password linked to it 3)proof of purchase as the original owner and heading to the apple store.
It's sad but sometimes friends just grow apart. Try to talk to her and find out if she's upset with you. If she says it's nothing you've done then accept that and move on.
