You shouldn't worry about other people stealing your thunder, happiness is not a zero sum game and this really seems like a non-issue unless a person is unreasonably selfish.
A friend of mine was visiting for a sleepover and at one point she just started singing tv commercial jingles, at first I thought the TV was on but that wasn't the case :)
To teach you logic mainly and as mr. McCann pointed out to teach you how to think and tackle problems. Not to mention the fact that systems of equations become very relevant in more advanced levels of math.
