If you found a dollar bill in the street, it would not be worth trying return it. If you found $10000 it would. At what point in between those two numbers would you keep what you found?

Anything over $100 I would definitely do the right thing and try to find the rightful owner.

Any updates on Rooster's health Ray ?

The story of Rooster's health has become VERY odd. I'm not now sure what to believe. I promise that as soon as I know anything REAL. I'll tell you all.

If I lost or found a wallet containing any amount, I would attempt to find the owner.

Over $100, with or without identification, I would also try, but where I found it would be a consideration.  I once found a $100 dollar bill in a large mall parking lot and I kept it.  How could I have ever found the owner?---it didn't even necessarily belong to someone who actually went into the mall.  On the other hand, had I found it in a local grocery store, I would have turned it into the office.

I have lost (paper) money only once or twice in my life.  $100 or under, I figure it's it my fault and I wouldn't even attempt to recover it.

(And I figure Ray Dart would make me a nice cup of tea to sooth me while I recovered from my loss.)

If it’s just a stack of unmarked, untraceable cash, the only limit I wouldn’t pocket is what I can’t physically carry away.

If there were some way to ID whose money it was, I draw the line at $1000.

A reasonable approach.

Do you recall some years ago that some teenagers found a suitcase buried in the desert somewhere in the Southwest?

They bought a cadillac with some of the cash immediately. The car dealer notified the police and they confiscate the money pending someone claiming it.

No one did, and the money was eventually returned to the two boys. (Police thought it was probably drug money and no one wanted to say it was theirs.)

I wonder if they were allowed to live---never heard any more about it.

A fool and his money.... or fools, as the case may be.
I remember in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, Spicoli spent his windfall for saving Brooke Shields on hiring Van Halen for his birthday party.
I’d like to think it went something like that. Lol.

I am going to say my limit is $50. Also how much effort are we talking? I have found a twenty in the gutter in a shopping plaza. There was no one around so I kept it. There was no reasonable expectation of finding the owner. Too many stores to go in and ask, and by the location and condition the bill, I am sure the owner was long gone. I found a $50 bill in a nightclub next to where people order their drinks. The bartender was a friend so I let her know I found the money and if someone asks about it send them my way. No one came looking so I kept it, I  think that was a reasonable amount if effort in that case.

Okay Ray, you said street. In my head this street is dirt paved and deserted. There are no businesses around nor houses. The money must have been like the saying "pennies from Heaven"... And in that case who's to deny the gift from Heaven!?!?! In my fantasy I'd keep it! 😉 Its probably a good thing I've only found $20 in a parking lot and $15 in a 99cents store. The 20 went in my gas tank. The 15 went to my book cover fund. 😊

If i found a $100.00 bill i will donate it to Humane Society for Dogs / Cats and if i found a $1.00 i would keep it . If i found a Wallet / Purse with money in it,  no matter what amount , i would turn it over to the local police. I found a persons Medicaid / Medical Assistance card and mailed it to their address and never got any reply from them.

We are no longer value based society. Returning a dollar not worth the hassle. On the other hand large denomination cops might pull you up? If you don't disclose.
