Fleas are hard to get rid of if you don't start as soon as the first flea shows up. What I use is foid grade diametacious earth. It is a powder that is harmless to pets and humans, but it tears up insects and arachnids. You put it on carpets and upholstery, wait 30 minutes or more and then vacuum it up. Empty your vacuum outside, if you have a bag either change the bag or throw a flea collar in it. On hard floors like wood or tile, put it along the baseboards and leave it until you next house cleaning. Repeat as needed with weekly house cleaning until the problem is gone.
