Because hugs feel good and are good for your health. Giving and getting one is beneficial for both people.

Nothing to do with spreading the gospel:
I found this to be a way to hopefully engage in "Witnessing", or "Outreach" . . . . In other words it breaks the ice for Christians to preach to you and give you the gospel.
When me and my son were walking in Salem Massachusetts, I saw couple people with those signs. As I walked up I saw the backpack with the "Gospel Pamphlets" hanging out. I looked at one of the guys and said . . "All Right Bring it in." with my arms out, and my son did the same to the other guy. After our embrace, the man I had hugged said, can I talk to you for a minute . . . And I said "Just enjoy the sharing of a warm embrace from another brother of the human race . . . Nothing more needs saying."
Because hugs are wonderful! They lift my spirits.
Because if they charge for it ... It's prostitution.
