I used to use that word quite often. When mixing grout or thinset for tiling, we would mix it and let it slake for 5 minutes and then mix again. Slaking lets the minerals in the mix soak up more moisture and perform better.

Like Joy, I learned it in the context of "slake one's thirst"---and considering how long ago I first heard it, it must have been my grandfather who used the word.
I haven't heard anything but quench used in quite a while.
