If we are seeking truth why do we go with preconceived notions and non receptive mind?

People do this a lot.  Often, I think they're lying to themselves about the premise.  They're really looking for validation.

We who? Generalizations like this commonly fail the truth test.

A sincere quest for truth is incompatible with the perpetuation of preconceived notions (bias) and closed-mindedness. Seeking only to confirm one's biases is willful self deception.

Because we often come to decisions based on prior indoctrinations.

Everyone here has been exposed to certain "Conditioning" . . . In our formative years reward and retribution guided decision making. Love admiration and praise were given for those things that aligned with our parents world view, while scorn disdain and mockery could even be followed with physical punishment for those things our parents were clearly against . . . One would either comply or form a hard line against depending on their mental fortitude.

Provide this conditioning structure every day from the people you look to for food, shelter and warmth and a malleable mind will succumb.

These aid in the formation of our world view thus are established as preconceived notions that do not allow for a complete open mind.

I try and pride myself in being TOTALLY open to anything . . . It's just that there is need for extraordinary proof the more extraordinary the claim of something. Being skeptical isn't bad, it is just weighing the evidence rather then embracing naivity and ignorance.

Fortunately, at an early age, I was told that truth exists and I was free to search for it.

I was given a map with an origin and a direction, but with blank space all around.  Numerous dead ends were noted, but I was free to follow them if I wished and I occasionally did so.

Following those dead ends gave me a "feel" for what was "not truth" and made it much easier for me to be able to recognize truth as I slowly came across its many manifestations which eventually coalesced for me into  coherent whole.

And the insights and revelations that the truth gives is truly magnificent.

If you do not feel the same way, I probably be tempted to feel sorry for you.

Of course I am still adding detail to the map, but the picture is quite clear and detailed already.

I like this analogy Thoams - "I was given a map with an origin and a direction, but with blank space all around. Numerous dead ends were noted, but I was free to follow them if I wished and I occasionally did so. "
