To avoid damage...is it plug the cord into your cell phone first and then into the wall (?) Or: Plug it into the wall and then plug the cord into your cell phone (??)

Technically it doesn't matter. Your phones are called smart phones for a reason.

I've change most of my outlets over to accept USB plugs. I can plug my phone in almost anywhere in my house to charge it. No need for the charging cube.

They just get wired in like any old receptacle. No special wiring needed for the USB.

They can get expensive if you buy them at Home Depot or Lowes. I usually buy them when they are on a Daily Deal on eBay. About $9.99 each, or less.

Personally I would plug the charger in first cuz IF something goes wrong I'd rather be zapped by my phone then by the outlet.
