I knew a registered nurse who the doctor she worked with would prescribe her antibiotics when she needed them.... So she didn't need to take time off of work.

My doctor recently told me a story that began with the phrase "When it was acceptable for doctors to write their own prescriptions."

I didn't get the idea that it was illegal, but apparently their are potential downsides to that practice---perhaps because of the opioid addiction issues tht exist in the US at the moment.

I don't think it is illegal, but it is unethical. It also depends on the type of prescription. If the doctor know he has something like strep throat, writing a prescription for an antibiotic, isn't that big of deal. However if he is writing a prescription for a narcotic, that is frowned upon.

My sister is an N.P. And I asked her this question. She said most Dr.'s will ask another Dr. To write their prescriptions for then. They are not suppose to write their own, but some probably do.

It depends on what state the doctor is licensed in.  There is no universal license in the US.

Though personally, I wouldn't trust a doctor who wrote prescription for his own medicine ... No matter what it was.
