I've never had a heat pump nor have I ever dealt with one. Hopefully, someone will come along and help you out. Have you tried looking for your problem on YouTube or Google?

I just checked Google too and found a myriad of thing that could cause the noise. Maybe it's time to call a professional to look at it.

My husband is going to do that but I just wanted to see if I could find information that would provide some hope to get us through the rest of the season without any danger. Everyone is out to make money more than giving honest answers. I thank you again for your reply.

heat pumps is like a heating unit the uses compressor.

it uses reverse valve to move refrigerant to the indoor coils first, then outdoor coils.

indoor coils becomes the condenser coils and outdoor coils become the evaporator coils.

the indoor fan and coils sucks the cold air though the coils giving u warm air.

the outdoor fan blows the cold air out from the outdoor coils.

We don't use it in the winter because we have a wood stove for heat and have the HP set real low...like 58-62.

We are nearing triple digits now and only when the blower stops sometimes there is thumping . I found out it could be blower wheel out of balance. That made sense to me because there is a roll of insulation on top of one corner of the unit in the attic. The attic is so full there was no room to put it anywhere else. I suspected that had something to do with it because of the subtle vibration over the years??

My husband is going to ask someone about it but would you kindly give your opinion? Thank you again for your reply.
