Why can the scientific community not explain what "dark matter" or "dark energy" are?

This is because "dark matter" and "dark energy" have never been directly observed, they are inferred theoretically as explanations to as yet unexplained astronomical observations.

I liken it to the theory of God, minus the vanity and parables.

As "The Z" stated.

Also, just because scientists can prove something exists, doesn't mean they fully understand it.  Such as the research that shows quantum linkage between particles can be proven and artificially created - but they don't know how, why, or even if it occurs naturally.

Is "dark matter" proven to exist? Or is it perhaps a convenient invention to explain gravitational anomalies that are not understood?

I just glean what I pick up on NPR and Facebook news links ... so not up on the latest "Dark matter" stuff.

I'm still waiting for them to admit ... if our universe is expanding, it has to expand into *something* ... so there *must* be multiverses. (which makes me wonder how those who inhabit the multiverse ours is crowding feel about it.)
