If they let the future farmers of America (or FFA) raise a farm animal then have it slaughtered at the end of the school year then why not let the future scientists of America have their dissections? Now I draw the line at making the class mandatory. No kid should be forced to dissect anything ESPECIALLY if it upsets their psyche!
While I hated it, it does serve a purpose. Hands on learning is the best type of learning. Personally, it wouldn't have been half as bad if the used something other than formaldehyde to preserve them and if I didn't have biology for my first class, both in middle school and high school.

Absolutely! . . .
I think the animals should be donated from natural means . . . Either an intact road kill or something else.
I do not believe in "Killing" the animal to dissect them.
I had to do a dissection of a fetal pig in 6th grade. I thought it was pretty gross, but also cool.
I believe it should be voluntary with parent's permission. It was a very tramatic experience for many in my class.
