It's origins comes from the ancient belief in tree spirits. It was always knock on wood but changed to "touch wood" but the reason for doing so was the same.

NO, it is not true .it is said in order to prevent a confident statement from bringing bad luck. So if someone feel relaxed by touching the wood i don't think there is something bad in this.even Indians believe in this

Most of us are aware---either implicitly or explicity---of two sayings: Man proposes; God disposes and Steinbeck's poem which contains the line "The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, Gang aft agley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, For promis'd joy!g that." (i.e., Things often go wrong even though you have carefully planned what you are going to do.)

So as Dark Majiin and music lover gave you good information:  It is said in order to prevent a confident statement from bringing bad luck by incurring the “The envy of evil spirits and the anger of the gods, who take a dim view on mortals bearing too much pride and who get especially annoyed when they're responsible for your run of good luck and you're not grateful.”

It's simply a superstition - it means nothing.

It comes from the lumberjacks in wooded areas who would
"hug" a tree for a safe felling of the tree.
