Everyone's names on here are things like "Gator Blu" and "Skip Skip" [I do love the names. I do] when mine is my real name. Why have people put 'fake' names?

We came from another site which closed down,  and these are the names we had there.

We wanted everyone to know who we were on here and to keep in touch with each other.  Most of us know quite a few of our real names off site through email and such.

Also, there's safety in anonymity. With the way the internet is, there's no reason for anything personal about about ourselves, which we may share, to be spread all over the internet.

Google is just a click away. Enough of our privacy is already invaded as it is.

Your name is very pretty... I had no idea it was your real name though.

@david- Ask. -We came from Ask but a few were on here before it closed, so we came here to our new site-home from their recommendation (rooster and Angela were already administrators here as well as Ask members, so we transferred here). We did have some members from other sites that closed try this site out, but they didn't make it because they thrived on drama and we just aren't that way.

It makes sense to protect you personal information which we already supply too much of these days. Especially on the internet. On this site, it is not a personal page like facebook would be. Most people I interact with on FaceBook are family and people I know off the internet.

As far as I know you can use your name if you wanted to. But the spammers will take advantage of the information given the chance. You would have to ask a mod to confirm though. Im pretty sure its allowed.

Lets remember... The PM feature. That can be used to share privately with someone you know to that extent.

As mentioned, most do it for either anonymity or because many of us came from other sites such as during the Askpocalypse (closing of ask.com community in June 2015) and they required aliases. Others use it to describe themselves. For example, while Corey is my real name, Goofyhawk has always been a given name to describe alittle about me: I'm goofy and love Red Tail Hawks.

It is a way of protecting ourselves. You want to put out as little actual info out there as possible. You are using your real name, then someone asks about your favorite color, or pet. Someone asks about where you live and then you give out your city. That is enough information for someone to steal your identity. So I use Gator Blu and while most everyone here knows my dogs names I don't use them as passwords or answers for security questions. When someone asks where I live I never give thee city, but give a general idea, like Central Florida.

The pseudo name grew on me..... When I get published many will "know" my name but I can still stay "anonymous."

Sincerity is right..... We wanted others to know we made it out of the sinking ask.com boat alive!!! LOL!

All my alias are just that. I don't use them in my real name or nickname.  I live in Houston,  4th largest city in America, 6,500,000 million people surround me.

It's fairly common in Internet etiquette to use a "handle" or pseudonym. I've been Dozy, Dodgy and Didge (short for didgeridoo) and once was even BBB (acronym for Bulldust Baffles Brains). It's fun and you can create the kind of character that fits the name.

Because it's just not wise to use your real name on the internet.  But people can use any name they choose .. It's up to them.   Anyway, what difference does a name make ... better to get to know people by how they act.

There many great answers so i assume you've got what you were looking for. But i would express some perspectives on my own.

Internet is a very amazing discovery. A great tool for progression and fasten the activities and a worldwide communication. That's how such communities stand. But like anything else, there are cons and pros. Internet can cause the privacy becomes vulnerable. Each person  needs privacy, value privacy and would do their best to protect it.

It's common to not give out personal information on internet sites and communities. Nobody wants to be too exposed. First and last name are part of personal information and many are uncomfortable to share it with the world of internet. Because you never know whom you can trust. It's not about just people that you might even feel they are good people. It's about internet spy and the possibilities that there's always someone watching you. A spammer, a con, an abuser anyone! So due that, people choose other related names or creative profile names for themselves! And some are also comfortable to share their true name. Like myself.

However, mostly there's always a private place provided by the websites for the members who establish further trust and relation so they could share any form of information they would like to.

At such communities like here. We look at each other by how we act, think,do, believe and prefer. We share true experiences, feelings and preferences. But yet we do protect our privacy lines and answer as much as we want it to be out.

There many members here that i can write more than ten pages about them. About who they are, how they are, what they like, what they'e done and what they've been through in their lives. We do learn things about each other but sometimes we don't really need certain information.

I dunno.  For a while I think I was posting under a nom de plume  and then suddenly it was my real name.  Lost of privacy not a scary thing for me as, depending on which search engine you ask, there may be as many as 17, 446 David Greens in these here United States.  I would like to know how to get back to my secret identity, tho.

Changing your name is simple, my friend. Simply click on your profile picture (im your case the default silhouette) and click "Profile." Scroll down to your profile stats and click "Edit Profile." There, you can change your name and upload a profile photo if you so desire. When your done, click "Save Changes" and BAM! Name changed! Good luck!

And along with corey's great advice, you can put in your bio paragraph what your previous name was -just have it there a few weeks- so others can know what you previous name was and make that connection -then delete it in a few weeks. All your answers will stay the same-or you can keep the first name the same and then use a describing pseudonym for your second space on the name. This site does not accept one name which is why I had to add my real middle name but my first is not my given name.
