I plan on leaving my current job, how long in advance should I tell the company that I am leaving? I don't want to burn any bridges with my connections so I want to do it properly.

If
you are leaving your current job, what's the right amount of notice
to give them? In the US, the standard is to give a two week notice.
Which gives them a bit of time to prepare for your transition. If you
are in a complex job where you have a lot of technical know-how or
know how other people don't have the know-how, you may want to give
the employer more time so that they are ready for that transition and
can take the knowledge that you have and can teach other people that
information. If you are working for a small company where your
departure is going to leave them really hurting, then you want to
give them as much notice as possible.

So
in general, I recommend at giving at least two weeks. Give the
company more time if you think they might need it and benefit from
it. If you are in an environment where people are asked to leave the
same day the give their notice, you still want to generally give two
weeks, but expect there going to ask you to leave at the end of the
day.

A lot of times notice period will be stipulated in your contract. In order to leave a job and still receive your pay package you would be required to respect that notice period requirement.

Similarly, contracts can also include protection for employees in terms of notice of redundancy and other actions.
