My aunt told me she had a will, and then she passed away and now my cousin says she can't find it. Is there a way I can find out if the will was filed?

Yes, you can find out if a will was filed quite easily. You just need to know the name of the county that she lived in.

Some courts have copies of their probate dockets online, so start with a web search for the local probate court and from there you should be able to search for your aunt's name.

Be aware though, that not all courts dealing with probate are known as 'probate courts' - so if your search doesn't come up with the name of a court try searching for '(name of county) probate records'.

If they are not online, just visit the court (if it is close enough to you for you to be able to do that) or write/fax requesting a copy of the will.

You will need to pay a copying fee per page for each page the will contains, and you will also need to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope for them to send the copy to you.

I hope you find out what you need to know.
