Maybe a good way to begin is to find a topic of interest to you, and review the answers to questions. You can do this by going to the bottom of any page and click on "search an answer". Then you can look at most recently answered questions, or you can select a category in the left column to narrow your preference. As you browse answers, you will quickly recognize usernames associated with answers you perceive as "good" or "smart". You can click on the user name to go to the user porfile and introduce yourself.
You may do the same thing by browsing the various groups (under groups tab) or by browsing debate answers (under debate tab). On this site, if you find someone's answer you feel is especially good, you can always click on their username and be taken to their profile page. Each profile page has a "shoutbox" (scroll down a bit on the page) where you can leave messages. You can also join groups to become better acquainted.
Good luck, and welcome!
