It's polite to thank someone for their effort. For those of us that check our control panel, we see if someone has responded to our answer. It's nice knowing I helped someone, or if I wasn't clear enough to the person who wrote the question, which gives me a chance to improve my answer.
I personally think it is a courtesy to leave a short comment. Also remember to rate their answer to your question.
It's not bad etiquette, most people like getting positive comments like "Thank you" in the comment, or "This helped a lot", something like that. It isn't necessary that you do this, it's just there for you to use if you want to.I think it's proper to leave a comment if you are satisfied with the answer that you are looking for.
I think out of courtesy you should. It lets the person know that you appreciate that they took the time to answer your question.
If u think that it was really good and it really helped u out then i think it would benefit you and them. Just for fun!

No I do not think a comment is necessary but you ought to give them a thumbs up for taking the time to answer or a thumbs down if they were just leaving a stupid comment to get points.
Its like away of saying thank you but not necessarily all you can do is just give them a Tumbes up to show ur appreciation.
