Gases are refined via a process known as refining; they are generally cooled and compressed until they liquefy. Refining basically is a method of distillation of a particular substance.

Fluids as well as gases can also be refined via extraction with the help of a particular solvent which disbands the matter of interest or the surplus impurities. A number of solids can be refined by increasing crystals in a solution of the adulterated matter, the normal arrangement of the crystal is likely to support the preferred substance and eliminate other types of particles.

Chemical reactions are frequently applied to eliminate impurities of certain substances. The application of silicon and additional semiconductors in electronics is primarily dependent on exact control of impurities. Over the period of years quite a few methods of refining have been invented like zone refining.
