A URL is basically just a websites address on the internet. The best way to find a website's URL when you don't already know it is to use a search engine.

If you think of the internet like a really big town, and your browser as a taxi cab that drives your around that town- then the URL is simply the address that your browser needs to take you to.

For example, if you wanted to view the information on the ESPN sports website, you'd need to tell your browser to go to that specific location so you can read what's been posted there.

The quickest way would be to tell your browser 'go to this address' and simply give it the URL.
That's the same as telling your taxi driver to go to a specific house on a specific street- he wouldn't have any problems finding it.

Things can get a bit trickier if you don't know the exact URL of the website, but that's where search engines come in handy.

Search engines work a bit like sat-navs in your taxi cab.

If we go back to the example of the ESPN website- if I didn't know the exact address, I'd simply give a search engine as much information as I know about the site, and it should be able to work out what the exact address is.

So if I were to type in the words 'ESPN' and 'Sports' into a search engine, one of the first search results would be www.espn.go.com/, the exact website I was looking for!

Now the first part of the URL is the protocol for example "http" while the second part of the URL is the full qualified domain name for example "www.soso.com". And the third part is the path that locates at which the particular webpage is located like "/url.html"
